Course description:
The course will instruct participants in the implementation of a team-based approach to curriculum development, that utilizes the expertise of both classroom teachers AND specialists in different fields.  Therefore, to register for this course, participants will need to form school-based teams of three or more professionals.  In order to ensure equitable participation and engagement of specialists, there needs to be a minimum ratio of one specialist to each classroom teacher on the team. These collaborative teams will learn the principles of backwards design for curriculum development as well as techniques and protocols used in developing Professional Learning Communities. The end result will be a cohesive unit plan designed by each team and a solid understanding of an effective method for collaboration. The expectation is that this unit will be complete and ready to be taught in the 2008-2009 school year. The model that will be used for this course was designed and tested by teachers and specialists at Robinson Elementary School. The intent is to share responsibility between the classroom teacher and specialists for curriculum development and implementation, thus reducing the workload of the classroom teacher while increasing ownership of the curriculum by specialists.
