Mrs. Weldon's Third and Fourth Grade

Mrs. Weldon is a good teacher. She is very nice, but we are sworn to secrecy not to tell other students. She has a good sense of humor, she makes us laugh a lot in class! She loves to teach science and history. She knows a lot about those subjects.
Our room is very grownup. It is not a play place, but a workspace. We don't have any toys, but we do have a few games that we can use for inside recess. We have tools for learning, like rulers, measuring tapes, markers, colored pencils, writing tools and other things like that.  We keep our room very neat.
Our class is different from the other classes at school, because we have third and fourth graders in the room. Most of the classes we do together, except for math and science. For math, the third graders go to Mrs. Lilly's class. Mrs. Lilly has 21 students for her math time! Mr. Edwards is a new teacher at our school  and he comes in to help Mrs. Lilly teach us math. He is very tall. He is very nice and very good at math. We are lucky to have two good math teachers. In third grade math, right now we are working on how many different ways you can make 10.  In fourth grade math, we are working very hard on multiplication and making sure that we have learned our addition facts.

The fourth graders stay in Mrs. Weldon's room. We work on multiplication and problem solving. She teaches us fun rhymes to help us remember our multiplication facts. "Eight times eight fell on the floor, picked it up, it was 64." She also gives us ways to remember facts, for instance, she might say "Fast Adding Equal Groups" and that is the definition of multiplication.
Fourth graders go to Mrs. Pudvar's class for science. Sometimes, the third graders stay with Mrs. Weldon and sometimes we go to Mrs. Lilly. The third grade is studying the human body right now and the fourth grade is studying light and shadow.
In social studies, fourth grade studied Rules and Laws and the third graders went with Mrs. Lilly to learn about the counties of Vermont.
The fourth graders are reading Fantastic Mr. Fox and most third graders are reading Shoeshine Girl. We meet in groups that read the book together and go over the discussion questions. When we are not working with the teacher, we work independently. We might write down questions that we have, answer questions and read the next chapter.
Everyone has 15 minutes a day to work on our Writers. We type and if we can type with the correct amount of words per minute and accuracy, we go to the next level of the lesson.
In spelling, there are three groups that have different lists of words. The work books are orange, purple and yellow. We don't write in the books  however, we copy our answers into a notebook.
We write often in our classroom. We write paragraphs about what we like to do or we might write a paragraph about what we are learning in science. Sometimes we might write a poem.
Every day at lunch, the fourth graders are in charge of the composting. After everyone has eaten lunch, we have to get the kitchen compost. We have to weigh all the compost and write the weight down. We have to clean up the area. The fourth graders are the oldest group at the time we eat lunch. We have to be good role models for the younger grades.
Some of the fourth grade girls and boys do chorus at recess on Thursdays. First, we listen to the songs so we know what they are. Then we try singing them with the music. The music is played on a CD so we can hear what it sounds like.
Fourth graders can also be in band. We meet on Fridays as a whole beginner band on 8:00 AM. There is a French horn in our group that just started. We have lessons on Thursdays or Fridays. The band is starting to sound pretty good. During band time, the third grade is learning cursive with Mrs. Weldon.
The third graders like to be in the third/fourth grade because it makes them feel special. They get to see what they will have to learn next year and what not to do next year! The fourth graders like having the third graders in the classroom because we can teach them new things. We think this year is going to be really fun with Mrs. Weldon.
