PBIS: Positive Behavioral Intervention & Support

PBIS is a school-wide approach to promoting and maximizing academic achievement and behavioral competence. Its goals: to enhance the capacity of school teams to provide the best behavioral supports for all students and that all students, parents, staff, and faculty will be able to clearly state and define behavioral expectations.

What does PBIS look like? PBIS has is a school-wide system with:

  1. A common purpose and approach to discipline
  2. A clear set of positive expectations and behaviors
  3. Procedures for teaching expected behaviors
  4. Procedures for encouraging expected behaviors
  5. A continuum for discouraging inappropriate behaviors
  6. Procedures for ongoing monitoring and evaluation (data)

What are the behavioral expectations at VUES? This year we have launched that “VUES POPS”!!! POPS stands for Positive, Organized, Polite, and Safe. We expect all students and adults in the building to model these expectations.

Our first phase of implementing PBIS at VUES is focusing on demonstrating these behaviors in the public places of our school: hallway, cafeteria, & playground. Students who model expected behaviors may be recognized with a “paw” sticker. Students will work collectively to earn “paws” for classroom and school-side celebrations! Be sure to ask your child about this new, exciting, and fun initiative that will help foster a positive place to learn!
